Every crew in hip hop has had some sort of theme that every member complied to. Bad Boy had their flashy theme, led by The Notorious B.I.G., Death Row had the thug image, Roc-A-Fella had the big money theme, and Murder Inc. had the Mafioso look about them. The most recent crew to take over hip hop is Young Money. In trying to look for a theme within this crew, one would find themselves baffled.
Each of the crews mentioned above had a leader, but when their leader fell off, they had no backup. When Biggie was murdered, Puff Daddy scrambled to make Mase into a star. When Dr. Dre left Death Row, the bottom fell out, and when Ja Rule was attacked from every angle, there was no one from his camp in a position to replace him. However, Young Money is much different than that.
First, they sent Lil Wayne out and he became the biggest rap star. The popularity of Wayne was moved over to Drake and he is now one of the biggest stars. With Lil Wayne going to prison in a month, Drake will be the one to take over as the star of Young Money. Because of that, it will become his job to make sure that the other members become stars. Next in line is the female rap sensation, Nicki Minaj.
While Young Money is a family, there is no universal style between the artists. It is unique for a label, especially a rap label, for all of the artists to be such individuals. Drake recently spoke on this and he said that this is the way that Lil Wayne wants it to be. He said that if a person is talented, Wayne will sign them to the label. Then, the style that they come with is the style that he allows them to keep as they build their careers.
Once an artist is signed to Young Money, it is up to them to just make music. Wayne looks over the music, but he makes no changes.
