Cam’ron gives props to Jay-Z

26 Dec

At the peak of his career, Cam’ron was a member of Roc-A-Fella Records. To date, Cam has only had one platinum album. Among the guest rappers on his only platinum effort was Jay-Z. At the time, it looked as if Cam’ron was one of the most loyal people to Jay-Z. But, behind the scenes, there was animosity between the two rappers.

Little did the people know that there was a divide between Roc-A-Fella Records. There was one side that was Jay-Z and another side that was Dame Dash. When Jay-Z retired, he had hoped to make Memphis Bleek the new CEO of the label, while he took over Def Jam. Becoming the CEO of Roc-A-Fella meant that Bleek would take Jay-Z’s role at the label.

Eager to take complete control of the label, Dame Dash wanted Cam’ron to become the next CEO of the label. In the end, a feud between Jay-Z and Dame Dash sparked that led to a feud between Memphis Bleek and Cam’ron. This is what led to the infamous Roc-A-Fella Records split. In 2005, Cam officially left the Roc and he took his issues public.

Beginning in 2006, Cam’ron began a series of disses aimed at Jay-Z. Only once did Jay ever respond to the disses of Cam’ron. Being in the position as CEO of Def Jam, he felt bigger than his opponent and he was lowering himself with a diss. Jay-Z simply responded with “Dig A Hole,” a hard-hitting response that taunted Cam and questioned his image.

From that point on, the feud became between Jim Jones and Jay-Z. For the most part, Jones was completely ignored by Jay-Z and he stopped dissing him. What happened next was a similar breakup within Cam’ron’s Diplomat Records as what happened with Roc-A-Fella. In the end, Cam’ron ended up feuding with Jim Jones. It was during this time that he took a break from making music.

Early in 2009, he returned with new music. In May, he released his well-received album, Crime Pays. Since it had been three years since Cam’ron had released an album and spoken with the media, people were interested to see where he stood on many issues. When he was asked about Jay-Z, Cam said that he did not know him that well. He said that he respected his hustle and he could not be mad at anyone who makes money the way that he does.

For the past few years, the quality and interest in New York rap has decreased. Some rappers from the area are trying to say that life has been breathed back into their section of rap. Among those rappers that have made those statements is Cam’ron. He credits Jay-Z for the complete revival of New York rap. According to Cam, without the incredible sales of The Blueprint 3, there would be no buzz around New York rap right now.
