On the Rise: French Montana

20 Dec

There is a major underground hip hop scene in New York City. After the rise of 50 Cent from the mixtape levels and into superstardom, there are many other rappers trying to duplicate his success. If one were to look through this sea of rappers, they would find French Montana. Like many underground artists, he comes with his own crew.

Born in North Africa, the rapper has lived in Brooklyn, New York ever since he was thirteen years of age. Ever since 2002, he has been rapping and he created Cocaine City Entertainment to distribute DVDs. These DVDs have footage of French Montana rapping and freestyling. The skills of the rapper have caught the attention of many prominent artists.

In 2006, French Montana launched Cocaine City Records, to distribute his official music releases. Ever since that time, he had been out searching for a distribution deal. Earlier this year, Akon reached out to him. The final result was French signing a joint venture deal with Konvict Muzik. Under the terms of this deal, all Cocaine City music will be released, jointly on Konvict.

Now that he is a signed artist under Konvict/Universal, French Montana is ready to release his debut album. Currently untitled, the album will be executive produced by Akon and Mase, of Bad Boy Records will serve as an A&R for the album. There has not been too much more information released on the album, but Mase has been confirmed as a guest rapper.

The rapper also has connections with Tony Yayo of G-Unit, Dame Grease, and Jadakiss. They will all probably play a role in his debut release.
