Block Entertainment leaves Bad Boy Records

Block Ent.As Bad Boy Records prepares to move on from its distribution deal with Atlantic Records, Block Entertainment is preparing to move on from its distribution deal with Bad Boy Records. Recently, the label announced a new distribution deal with Capitol Records.

The deal is almost identical to the deal that Bad Boy worked out two months ago with Interscope Records. Back in 2005, Bad Boy Records acquired a 50% stake in Block Entertainment and assigned Bad Boy South as the exclusive distributor of Block. The CEO of Block, Russell Spencer pleaded with Diddy to re-claim the Block Entertainment name so that he could move on.

Under the terms of this deal, such acts as Boyz in da Hood will remain Bad Boy artists, but all new artists will be signed to Block Ent./Capitol Records. Soon, Block will phase out all of their Bad Boy acts and the deal will be officially done.

This is an effort from Capitol Records to become more appealing to hip hop acts after criticisms from such rappers as Chingy and Mims. The first release is expected to come sometime in 2010 from Block/Capitol.
