Is Elektra Records still a Hip Hop Label?

25 Sep

ElektraBefore the label suspended operations, in 2004, Elektra Records distributed a lot of hip hop music. The label housed such acts as Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott, Fabolous, Lil’ Mo, and the Flipmode Squad. Timbaland also created music for the label.

By 2004, Busta Rhymes, Lil’ Mo, and the Flipmode Squad had all left the label. They were the highest-selling acts on the label, so after they left, operations of Elektra were merged into Atlantic Records.

It has been five years since Elektra Records was last active. In that five years, Atlantic Records has taken a lot of Elektra’s characteristics. Also, Asylum Records, which had been defunct until 2004, was revived and it has taken Elektra’s entire style.

Earlier this year, the executives at Warner Bros. made the decision to revive Elektra Records. The first act signed to this renewed version of Elektra Records was Cee-Lo of the Goodie Mob. Will more hip hop acts be signed, or transferred to Elektra?
