Def Jam is on Life Support

13 Sep

Def JamJust one year ago, Def Jam was on top. The label was profiting off of releases from Nas, Ludacris, Young Jeezy, LL Cool J, and Kanye West. This is not even mentioning the luxury of having Jay-Z on their roster.

At the snap of a finger, Def Jam fell apart. Nearly the entire Roc-A-Fella Records’ roster left the label, Def Jam hitmaker, Rihanna, became involved in the Chris Brown incident and LL Cool J finally left the label.

The current stars of Def Jam can be counted with one hand. If you add to the fact that most of the label’s stars are in talks of leaving the label, you begin to realize the trouble that Def Jam is in.

There are some bright spots surrounding Def Jam, though. The label is still home to Rick Ross, Kanye West, and Young Jeezy. Def Jam is even going to have an entire show, the 2009 VH1 Hip Hop Honors, dedicated to them.

The people being honored on behalf of Def Jam will include founders Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin, Jay-Z will also be honored. It is true that those three men are deserving, but none of them have ties to the current Def Jam label.

The artists honoring Def Jam include Fabolous, DMX, Rick Ross, Eminem, and Ja Rule. Of the five artists listed, only two are actual Def Jam artists. DMX and Ja Rule made most of their hits while with Def Jam, but they are no longer Def Jam artists.

Bad news, Def Jam is falling apart, good news, Def Jam is being honored. What is sad about that is the fact that hardly anyone from Def Jam will be a part of the ceremony.
